Matthias is taken in by the Abbey dwellers after making the journey from his ravaged
town along with his sister Myrtle.  Matthias soon realizes that the life of an abbey novitiate
is not to be his, and he discovers his true destiny is to follow in the footsteps of Redwall's
famous protector of a bygone era, Martin the Warrior.   The 13 episodes of the first series
follow Matthias' quest to find Martin's sword, and help Redwall fend off the merciless
villain, Cluny the Scourge, and his army of vermin.


The mere mention of Cluny the Scourge is enough to send dibbuns scurrying beneath
their beds, and the sea-rat commander of the forces encircling Redwall deserves every bit
of his reputation.  Cluny is clever, but dangerously unstable, and deals death as casually
as most beasts would a hand of cards.   Cluny is plagued nightly be persistent visions of
his own death at the hands of a mouse-in-armour.



Constance is the latest in a long line of Redwall badger matriarchs.  Constance is kindly,
but fiercely protectiveof the abbey and its residents, and uses her strength and ferocity to
great effect when all other avenues fail.Constance is feared by her enemies, loved by her
friends - and respected by all.  She provides the necessary counterbalance to the
sometimes naively pacifist Abbot Mortimer.



Abbot Mortimer provides guidance in all things Redwall, and his kindly, benevolent manner
has served the abbey well through countless seasons of peace and prosperity.  Unfortunately,
with the arrival of Cluny the Scourge and his horde, the era of carefree days and feasting has
given way to the necessity of war, and the Abbot often fails to take into account the changes
forced upon peaceable creatures compelled to take up arms in their own defense.
